But I must have fallen asleep because I jerked my eyes open, wide awake, as I tried to figure out where I was, what time it was. I hurried through my brief morning routine and went to see Dako then Ooch, helping to get them both ready for their breakfast and day.

What the hell did I think I was doing with Lehrit? He wasn’t safe for me to be around, apparently. I tried to push him from my mind, but my thoughts returned to him and the things he’d told me aboard his ship about Leeth men, how they expected women to be available for them.

Maybe that was all I was to him.

Available.

The thought took up most of my head as I watched Dako and Ooch eat their morning meal, Dako talking and laughing and disrupting Ooch’s concentration as she tried to focus on her book.

“No reading at the table, Ooch.” I smiled as I removed the book from her and handed a piece of levin to Pibi.

Dako laughed at Ooch’s disappointment, and I aimed a small glare in his direction until he ate his breakfast, quiet again. I sipped on my moonwater. It wasn’t quite coffee, but it would do.

We had a couple of hours before I’d planned to take them to the creche. I could have kept them here with me, but the more I’d learned about the creche, the more curious I’d grown. It was where Leeth sent their orphans. That made sense now. I was curious to see how it was truly run—beyond my first impression when I saw it on the way to the market.

Dako growled at his food, tearing at it, drawing me from my thoughts, and Ooch nibbled delicately at hers, still ignoring him, still ignoring me. I almost laughed. Dako was adorable—his cheeks still so round, his fangs so little.

But the way he tore at his food, attacked it, reminded me of Leeth males, and that was a lot less than adorable.

After breakfast, we walked to the creche, a nervous maid following us as I pushed Pibi in her stroller. Kesna had remained at the palace with her tutor.

At least fifty children filled the space, and their noise bounced off the walls, everything from laughter to arguments to requests for help. Ooch squeezed my hand, and I tightened mine in return.

We’d get through this.

Once school got out, more children would pile in here, too.

One of the Leeth women working there approached me and bobbed a curtsey.

“There’s no need for that.” I shook my head.

“But the king has chosen you?” She sounded confused, and I laughed.

“I’m the king’s nanny. I’m like you.” I looked around. “Where do the children sleep?”

“In here.” She showed me to a large room. “This is for the girls.” The room was crammed with bunkbeds. “There’s a boys’ dormitory on the other side of the building.”

“Can I do anything to help?” I pushed sleeves up my arms that would only flop back down, but the women I could see only shrugged.
